Power Playground Initiative

Capstone team 'EMPOWER Playgrounds' designed and built secure playground equipment to generate power for schools in rural Ghana.

The electricity produced by the children's play will light school houses for both elementary and adult education, continbuting to a brighter future for the people of Ghana.













Spray Application System

Capstone team 'Precision Application Technology' designed and built a material application system for ATK Launch Systems Group.

The system applies a variety of soluble material from 0.05mg to 75mg per square foot onto various substrates.







Knee Restraint Test Fixture

Team: Crash Test Dummies

Students: Janene Christensen, Byron Halsey, Sterling Logan, Justin Pierce, Jacob Smith

Capstone team 'Team Crash Test Dummies' designed and manufactured a test fixture and developed test procedures for determining vehicle passenger comfort when a prototype knee restraint is deployed.

The fixture will enable the Crash Test Dummies' sponsor, Autoliv, to further develop new technology in automotive safety products.















Little Giant Ladder Hub

Capstone team 'Ascent' designed and built a tool tray attachment stystem for Wing Enterprises. The attachment system will work with the various Little Giant Ladder systems.

The scope of the project was to develop an attachment system enabling the user to attach, with one hand, a variety of customized tool trays and accessories to the ladder at any point on the ladder.





Ambient Light Rejection Screen

Capstone team 'LARS' developed an ambient light rejection projector screen and a test method to determine key parameters that allow optimal performance.









Universal Load Tester


Sponsor: Spring Works Utah

Team: Spring Loaded

Students: Richard Galati, Brianne Hamilton, Spencer Lifferth, Danen Lynn, Royce Tatton

Capstone team 'Spring Loaded' designed and built a universal spring tester for Spring Works that measures spring load capacity and displacement.

The tester will significantly increase current testing capabilities and will safely and accurately measure springs up to 40 inches in length and 10,000 pounds in load capacity.







Elevator Controller

Team: Twenty Fourth Floor

Students: Carlos Armendariz, Quentin Aten, Lora Gamble, Ryan Johnson, Mark Thompson

Capstone team 'Twenty-Fourth Floor' developed an elevator control system for the Elevator Company of North Salt Lake City.

The control system reads in user commands, sensor outputs, and motor telemetry and outputs commands to all the elevator's components.

Special emphasis was given to insure the safety and reliability of the elevator controller.









Test Data Acquisition Node

Capstone team 'Daffodil Design' designed and built a test data acquisition node for Liberty Safe.

The device will be used by the test engineers to validate published specifications for heat, water, smoke, and attack resistance of their safes.



Window T-Stud Priming

Team: Prime time Solutions

Coach: Abraham Teng

Students: Brad Hansen, Steve Jensen, Garnett Smitt, Derek Wesel, Jake Wheeler

Capstone team 'Prime Time Solutions' designed an automated system to coat T-studs with primer so they can be encapsulated with PVC and attached to windows used in the Hyundai Santa Fe.

The project provided a more efficient way to coat the studs rather than the old system AGC Automotive used to coat the studs by hand.





Parasitic Cold Start Load Unit

Capstone team 'Cold Start' designed an integrated engine test system for all John Deere engine model series.

The system will effectively generate and measure a torque-curve with starting condition temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius.







Oil Consumption Device

Capstone team 'D-Cell' was commissioned by John Deere to design, build, and test an oil consumption monitoring device.

This device must perform real-time monitoring during John Deere's 2000 hour life-test, and must be compatible with all 2.4-13.5 liter diesel engines.

Capstone team 'F3 Orthodics' designed and built a parametric mold for vacuum forming custom fit orthodics.









Visual Inspection Machine


Sponsor: CapPlus Technologies

Team: Spyrian

Coach: Predrag Raduulovic

Students: Dave Garrett, Nathan Hill, Christopher Murdock, Robert Stewart, Desiree Wolfgramm

Capstone team 'Spyrian' developed a visual pill inspection process for the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries.

This process involves 100% area visual inspection by cameras, processing of the image by software and sorting of passed or failed pills at a rate of 250,000 pills per hour. Currently this inspection is done by the human eye.
