Subsea Hydraulic Connector

GE Oil & Gas is a world leader in subsea drilling applications. They provide major oil companies with the necessary hardware, software, and knowledge to  be successful in drilling processes. One of the most important components of their drilling system is the Blow-out Preventer, or BOP. This two story tall
piece of equipment is located on the ocean floor and its hydraulic components are responsible for stopping the flow of oil should any leaks or other problems arise. The connections within this hydraulic system are currently unreliable and difficult to assemble. Every time a repair needs to be made on this BOP stack, millions of dollars are lost each day.

To improve the reliability of the hydraulic connectors, we eliminated the use of face seals from the current design. By using radial seals throughout the connector, we were able to hydro-test the parts to 10,000+ psi (7500 psi required). The shown design also allows for an easier installation process. Due to a rigid pipe, the pipe length must be within 1/8” of the required length in order for the connector to properly engage with the manifold face. The threads on the connector can adjust up to ½”, quadrupling the allowable tolerance while cutting the pipe.

By increasing the reliability, this design will save GE millions of dollars in shut-downs and repairs. The installation of the current Code 62 Flanged connector is time consuming due to a welding process and the required precision in cutting the pipe. The new design eliminates welding and allows for a faster and easier installation, allowing GE to better meet the needs of its customers.
