Union Pacific has been a major leader in land-based transportation for centuries. Union Pacific is investigating the potential benefits of a coal car cover that will reduce the effects of drag on the train as well as eliminate any loss of coal while in transit. The desired reduction in drag would amount to increased fuel efficiency and a reduction in track ballast undercutting. Union Pacific has requested that BYU Capstone Team 27 generate numerous coal cover models and perform testing to determine which cover, if any, is a good solution for minimizing the effects of drag on coal cars.
The team designed scale models of several covers along with empty cars and uncovered cars filled with a coal insert and were tested in a wind tunnel. Through extensive testing and analysis, the experimental cover with an extended brim showed significant reduction in aerodynamic drag on the coal cars. From analysis of the robust data set, the team anticipates a 46% maximum reduction in drag, relating to a significant potential fuel savings. In addition to drag reduction, the elimination of coal loss will save Union Pacific in track maintenance costs.
