About Capstone
THE CAPSTONE PIECES
Brigham Young University’s Capstone course has gained a reputation as one of the finest student mentoring experiences of its type in the country.
Capstone is a required, two-semester course for senior-level students, the heart of which is designing, testing, and prototyping a real-world industry engineering challenge. Multi-disciplinary teams of students from Mechanical, Manufacturing, Electrical, and Computer Engineering work on hardware and software projects across a wide range of industries.
Each team is assigned a faculty coach and works with a liaison engineer from the sponsoring company. Research indicates that students work harder and more creatively when their projects are authentic and of real consequence to a company.
Over the two semesters, students are taught a structured product design process and use this process to design and build real hardware and software. Capstone includes class time, lab time, and independent work time as teams.
