Capstone on your Resume

The question of how to list your Capstone project on your resume is a common one for students. Our Career Service directors in Engineering recommend the following:

  • You can list your Capstone project under the Education or Experience section
  • List the project as a Capstone project and your role as a team member. If you had a specific role, include that (ie. Team member, project manager, Team Lead, FPGA Lead, Mechanical Design Lead, etc)
  • Provide a bullet description of what the project was and the result achieved by the team
  • Do NOT list yourself as an employee of your sponsor. Even if you happen to be an employee of your sponsor, that should be a separate listing under Employment and not associated with your Capstone project.

Additionally, please follow these guidelines as you discuss or share information about your Capstone project:

  • Keep your NDA in mind. You may not share anything your sponsor has specified as proprietary or confidential.
  • In rare cases, you might not be permitted to name your sponsor or mentor. Generic names such as "US Govt" or "US defense contractor" can be substituted in those cases.
  • Check with your sponsor to determine what they are comfortable with you sharing.
Your External Relations Manager (Allyson or Lisa) is happy to proof what you'd like to list on a resume, LinkedIn page, etc. and provide feedback. They work directly with your sponsor and are aware of the level of confidentiality required.
